Andrew McLean reviews his skiing visit to Ultima Thule Lodge
The Ultima Thule lodge has an almost mythical aura surrounding it. Lots of people know about it, or have heard amazing rumors of it, but not very many people have been there, especially for skiing. Visit

Bush Pilots Of Alaska
Read Strangebird.com's review of a film in which Paul features heavily - Bush Pilots of Alaska.
Then we join Paul Claus who is a quintessential example of a modern bush pilot in Alaska. Having over 15,000 hours of bush flying experience, he started flying in Alaska as a student pilot when he was only 13 years old. Paul is known throughout Alaska for his ability to land in extremely difficult conditions, both on the sides of mountains and the most difficult of all bush flying: taking off and landing on glaciers. Many of these landings are made with full power as he lands on the steeply angled slopes. Together with his father John Claus he runs the Ultima Thule Lodge. This remote lodge is no less than a 150 miles from the end of the nearest road. Every single piece used to build and support the lodge has been flown in by Paul and John; even their Ford tractor. For the Claus’s the wilderness in which they live and the allure of flight in the remote region represents the "Ultimate Freedom."

Alaska Tours
Alaska Tours reviews the experience to be had at Ultima Thule:
Ultima Thule: Words used by Captain Cook on his Alaska voyages to describe the vast unexplored lands seen from the deck of his ship in 1778. Today on the other side of the mountains from where Captain Cook once explored, deep in the Wrangell St. Elias mountains you will find Ultima Thule Lodge. Located beyond all road access and in a remote park Ultima Thule operates several small bush planes to reach into this outstanding and remote country.

Ultima Thule, the Film
See "Ultima Thule," a stirring movie filmed in large part right here:
Ultima Thule – A journey to the edge of the world, a very beautiful film presented yesterday by Swiss filmmaker Hans-Ulrich Schlumpf. Set against a magnificent narration rendered in a softened tone by a human being who finds himself hanging somewhere between life and death, Schlumpf constructs a story which hovers progressively on the edge of life, «connecting» it in this way with the rhythm of the evolution of nature on this earth... His film is permeated with truly magnificent images... Not to be overlooked is the quality of the musical score by composer Fazil Say, ephemeral but never imposing.... Filmed mainly in Alaska, Ultima Thule – Journey to the edge of the world is one of those works which inscribes itself surreptitiously into the souls of those who see it.

The Edge of the World
Simon Willis documents his experience flightseeing with Paul:
Our plane came in so low and so fast we took the moose completely by surprise. Just as I thought our propeller would shred the poor creature our pilot yanked back the control column and the single engined DeHaviland Beaver leapt into the blue Alaskan sky. The brochure called this 'flightseeing' and, while the moose would probably use a different word, it was an exhilarating introduction to the flying skills of Paul Claus. But to this day, I’m convinced I saw those antlers duck.
"If you want comfort," Paul drawled, "Fly American. If you want to get there, Fly Me."

BK: We flew to Anchorage and John Claus, founder of the Ultima Thule Lodge picked us up. He knew what we were planning and was truly excited for us. The entire Claus family was incredibly supportive. They are true mountain lovers and the Ultima Thule is one of my favorite places on the planet.

ePinions review by Kristen Ulmer
Kristen Ulmer has a nice writeup of her skiing trip in December of 1999 to the backcountry in the Wrangell-St.Elias wilderness.
Paul Klaus owns a lodge and backcountry operation called Ultima Thule that sits 100 miles by plane from the nearest road in Chitna, Alaska. A tall, hard looking man in oil stained clothes, Paul is rude and impatient the way any man would be living so far from civilization. With his eccentricity comes world-class talent; The National Geographic Explorer program yearly shows him pulling microscopic mountain landings without breaking a sweat. We had stuffed his pockets full of money and asked to be taken somewhere BIG. Loading gear that day into the plane I questioned "Are there many skiers out there?" He jerked to a stop and looked at me through hard eyes: "There's no one out there" was his blunt reply.
