Science at Ultima Thule

Beachcombing

back << Animal Viewing / Camping >>

This is one adventure that is required when the weather is good. You will depart to the south from the lodge and fly across the Bagley Icefield which is
the largest piece of ice next to the North and South Pole. The expanse of it is enormous, the vastness cannot be explained, only seen to be believed.
Leaving the glaciers you immediately drop into the maritime climate of the North Gulf Coast of the Pacific Ocean. The habitat changes dramatically, the landscape changes from the forces of ice to the forces of the sea.

We watch glaciers calve into the ocean, the seals use the floating icebergs as pull outs. The white sand beaches stretch infinitely, covered with stuff of all descriptions, after all this is the top of the Pacific, the end of the road for floating debris. Storms can be violent up here and the resulting surf can be overwhelming. Wildlife abounds as does sea life.

A trip to the coast is unbelievable and cannot be described with words. This is like no other beach in the world..
